This scene is on Mirond Lake Saskatchewan. A favorite
fishing hole of the artist is visible in the background. Also the very
distant island is directly in front of the walk across portage, or winter
portage, on Mirond Lake. The big island in the foreground is the big
island north of the first narrows. The story of the two moose relates to a
hunt that happened in 2000 . Four hunters were to meet at their hunting
area for a week of hunting. The first two hunters had a Moose when the
second two arrived. In dressing the animal they found that it had two
puncture holes and three broken ribs on one side. The next day the
second two harvested a even larger Moose who upon closer examination had
traces of blood one of his horns. The hunters concluded that these two
animals had been in a battle very shortly before the hunters had arrived
on the scene. In this painting the artist has depicted the scene
earlier, where the slightly smaller animal is leaving the area, with a
glance over his shoulder, and both ears are trained on what is happening
behind him. He is giving the larger animal some space. Thus the painting
was titled Before the Challenge! |
